Old Field Fork of the Elk | Stream Restoration
Location: Pocahontas County, WV
Date: Design Ongoing
Old Field Fork of the Elk is located near Slaty Fork, WV surrounded by farmland. Green Rivers initially partnered with Elk Headwaters Watershed Association and Downstream Strategies to perform stream assessments and develop conceptual stream restoration designs. A conservation easement was placed along almost 3,500 feet of Old Field Fork, in addition to 14,600 feet of tributaries. The area has been highly impacted by a reduction in stream sinuosity and pattern, as a result the mainstem and associated tributaries have been subject to high incision rates, increased bank instability, and ultimately increased sediment load. This field site is located within the Greenbrier Limestone and is thus highly impacted by karst activity. Green Rivers retained Draper Aden Associates to conduct a resistivity survey throughout the field site. Their findings allowed Green Rivers to enter into the final design phase.
