Aluminum Filter Study | Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Remediation
Location: UPshur County, WV
Date: Design/Construction 2016 - 2017 & Active 2017 - 2018
The Aluminum Filter Study is located near the small community of Alton in Upshur County, WV. Green Rivers worked with the WV Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Special Reclamation (WVDEP-OSR) to lower total aluminum levels to trout stream compliance on actively treated mine discharge from a forfeited coal mine.
The initial phase of the study tested the effectiveness and simplicity between a proprietary, ready-to-install unit and a custom unit, designed and built by Green Rivers. The results of the initial phase determined that Green Rivers’ custom unit provided the most successful filtration. The second phase of the study focused on optimizing the operation and maintenance of the custom unit. After several methods were explored, the study completed, as scheduled, with test results supporting that optimal cleaning, filtration, and maintenance had been achieved by Green Rivers’ custom built filter to remove trace aluminum in actively treated mine discharge. Green Rivers is in contact with local Public Service Districts to implement and test similar filters to remove aluminum to meet trout stream compliance.
